Caltech Surveys is a vibrant company that has been operating in Western Canada since 1990 servicing the Oil and Gas industry. Part of our business involves ensuring that our client’s needs are covered through GIS data and mapping services and products.

We are currently seeking an individual to fill the role of GIS Technician that will complement our team and be able to contribute to our forward vision. This position could be filled in Regina, SK; Calgary, AB; or Fort St. John, B.C.

The GIS Technician is responsible for mapping and GIS related tasks including the management, analysis, (appropriate) manipulation and presentation of GIS data and mapping. This team member will assist in the production of mapping products to help facilitate an array of projects, including wellsite and pipelines, utility and infrastructure, and land development.

– Spatial data management, analysis, reporting and presentation of GIS data and mapping products
– Manage, translate, and maintain complex survey/geographic digital data sets
– Edit and structure survey data for submission to GIS databases
– Communicate with Field Crew and / or Project Manager to verify information
– Produce application mapping products for the British Columbia Oil and Gas Commission
– Other duties are required

– College technical diploma or a degree in GIS or mapping
– Strong working knowledge and experience with ArcGIS
– Experience with AutoCAD, ArcGIS model builder, and FME
– Strong computer skills
– Strong knowledge of map production and automation
– Strong cartographic skills and attention to detail
– Strong commitment to excellence, attention to detail and time management

Plan Checker/Geomatics Technician

Caltech Surveys is looking to add a Plan Checker to our Regina office.

The successful candidate would be a part of a team that is responsible for the quality assurance and quality control of the Survey Plans received from the CAD department. Plan checkers are responsible for ensuring Plans are correct and that they conform to Caltech’s high internal standards, provincial & municipal regulations, industry licensing requirements and Land Titles registration requirements. In addition, they need to verify that Plans have all the required information on them in order to meet client needs/requests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure overall quality assurance and quality control
  • Review Plans for completeness and accuracy using Caltech and industry standards of practice including applicable provincial land surveying Manual of Standard Practice and industry licensing requirements
  • Ensure that Plans have all client requested information included on them
  • Conduct calculations and closures to ensure that Plan numerical information is correct and that they are based on the correct governing evidence assessment
  • Note errors and omissions on the Plans and suggest modifications
  • Process survey data and ensure proper surveying procedures were carried out
  • Review titles and all title documents; check with appropriate land titles and/or crown Public Land Standing Report
  • Ensure all codes/legislation are adhered to
  • Complete the Plan Checker Checklist
  • Maintain familiarity with current survey and checking techniques


  • Diploma in Geomatics Technology, or equivalent
  • Experience with well site and pipeline surveys for the oil and gas industry (experience in multiple provinces would be an asset)
  • Familiarity with pipeline project CAD products such as construction survey plans and as-built data would be an asset
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsurvey co-ordinate calculation software
  • An understanding of the requirements for plan submissions to ISC
  • Proven communication and organizational skills
  • This position may be required to work on plans for multiple provinces, including Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Experience in these provinces is not required, but would be considered an asset.

Survey Party Chief – SE Saskatchewan

We are looking for Survey Party Chiefs in South East Saskatchewan, including:
– Regina
– Estevan
– Weyburn

The successful candidates will be responsible for performing field survey work on projects in the construction, pipeline, oil and gas, land development and legal land surveying industries.

Key Responsibilities
•Manage and perform field survey work with the help of Survey Assistants
•Liaise with Project Managers to coordinate field survey work, to review and manage project budgets, timeline requirements, priorities and survey methodology
•Provide guidance, leadership and mentorship to Survey Assistants working with you
•Act as a company representative, liaising directly with client field representatives and land owners
•Prepare and communicate field notes, sketches, checklists and digital data in required formats for Project Managers, Land Surveyors and Drafting personnel
•Actively participate in and proactively support the advancement of the Caltech Surveys safety program

•Our successful candidate will be a graduate of a recognized post-secondary program related to surveying and geomatics or have an equivalent amount of related experience
•4 to 6 years of experience in the Survey Party Chief role
•Working knowledge and experience using Trimble equipment and software, RTK GPS and line locating would be considered an asset
•Proven communication skills – verbal and written; ability to produce accurate and legible field notes
•The ability to develop and motivate survey staff and work well in a team environment
•Must be able to pass drug and alcohol testing as required to access work sites
•Actively participate in Caltech’s health and safety program
•Experience with the use of ATVs/UTVs, snowmobiles and chainsaws would be considered an asset
•A valid driver’s license and can provide a clean driver’s abstract as well as completed training and valid tickets in First Aid, H2S and CSTS safety training, is an asset
•Availability to travel and work away from home as required
