Survey Assistant – Fort St.John

Caltech Surveys has an opening for a Survey Assistant based out of our Fort St. John, BC Office. As a survey assistant you will work on wellsite and pipeline surveys.

Candidates must have a valid driver’s license. Candidates must be able to pass drug and alcohol testing as required to access work sites.

Preference will be given to those candidates with experience and safety certification (example: First Aid/CPR, H2S Alive, PST, ATV Training), but neither is required.

Candidates must be willing to travel and spend time out of town, as well as work outdoors for extended periods of time. Must be willing to work longer days, and some weekends, including multiple days out of town.

Duties include:
– assisting survey party chief on wellsite and pipeline surveys
– placing iron posts with sledge hammer
– digging holes
– operating ATVs, GPS equipment, pipe locators
– marking wellsites and pipelines with wood stakes
– other duties as required

We are looking for a Commissioned Land Surveyor to join our team in Fort St. John, B.C. This individual will be responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, and final completion of specific projects related to surveying and mapping. This position is responsible for ensuring that every project is consistent with Caltech Survey’s commitments, goals, and strategies, as well as strict adherence to all applicable laws, standards, legislation, and regulations.

Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Working in a team environment to establish project scope, budget and schedule
  • Overseeing the development of survey plans, methods and procedures for conducting land surveys
  • Certifying survey drawings
  • Leading the planning, implementation, supervision, direction, and control of individual projects
  • Completing project evaluations and assessment of results
  • Ensuring timely and accurate invoicing
  • Ensuring the quality assurance and quality control of all products and deliverables
  • Providing direction and support to the project team
  • Developing strong client relations and working with the Business Development Manager to secure new clients and increase work with existing clients
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Registered, or eligible for registration as a Provincial or Federal Land Surveyor (BCLS, CLS)
  • Bachelor’s degree in geomatics engineering or survey engineering; or a college diploma in survey science or geomatics technology
  • Strong business presence – excellent work ethic, flexibility, resourcefulness, maturity and sound judgement
  • Good communication skills (interpersonal and written)
  • Strong analytical, mathematical and computer operating skills
  • Excellent time management skills, including the ability to manage multiple clients at one time and leada high performing team
  • Experience with wellsite and pipeline surveys for the oil & gas industry

Survey Party Chief – Fort St. John

Are you an enthusiastic and experienced Survey Party Chief looking to become part of a vibrant land surveying company? Do you enjoy the challenge of working as part of a fast paced, client focused team?

Caltech Surveys is currently looking for field staff to add to our Fort St. John, BC team. This position will require individuals that work well in a team atmosphere, enjoy being outdoors, and have the ability to work remotely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and perform field survey work with the help of Survey Assistants
  • Liaise with Project Managers to coordinate field survey work, to review and manage project budgets, timeline requirements, priorities and survey methodology
  • Provide guidance, leadership and mentorship to Survey Assistants working with you
  • Act as a company representative, liaising directly with client field representatives and land owners
  • Prepare and communicate field notes, sketches, checklists and digital data in required formats for Project Managers, Land Surveyors and Drafting personnel
  • Actively participate in and proactively support the advancement of the Caltech Surveys safety program


  • Diploma in Geomatics Technology or equivalent.
  • 3-5 years’ experience with legal, construction, or oil and gas related surveys.
  • Working knowledge of RTK GPS and conventional survey methods.
  • A keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • A positive attitude and a desire to exceed client expectations.
  • Willingness to work outdoors and travel if required. Comfortable with staying in hotels and camp, if necessary.
